Art--Education--Psychology--Judaism
My name is Avi Rose. This site is a summary of the work I do as an educator, psychologist and Rabbi. It is also a space for me to share the fruits of my ongoing art practice.
In my work as an educator, I lecture, write and teach courses centering on themes of cultural studies, arts- based education, art history, applied Jewish ethics and psychology. I am interested in cultural construction and the intersection of Jewish and universal ideologies. More recently, I have begun to work with educators on the use of arts and culture in their professional practice. For more details, go to my education page.
As part of this work, I keep an ongoing blog/website on the theme of Hebrew arts & culture entitled TREYSAR, you are invited to visit the site.
In my work as a visual artist I explore a diverse set of themes including personal identity, gender, sexuality, Jewish/Hebrew/Zionist images, ideology and reality, modernism & post-modernism, queerness and parenting. I am concurrently working on several projects using a variety of media. To see my work, go to my art page.
As a psychologist, I explore the impact of art and culture on the individual and collective psyche. I am interested in how the creation of art allows us to connect with ourselves and the society around us, by what motivates and prevents us from making art and how art can help our cognitive and emotional well-being. I am interested in how our psychological makeup and experiences impact our ability to learn and perceive.
In my Rabbinic Practice I officiate at life-cycle ceremonies, teach, lead rituals and Jewish calendar events. My approach is Cultural, Secular and Humanist and is highly informed by the traditions of modern Israeli Hiloni Judaism. I seek to create community and build rituals that are person-centered, taking into account the unique configuration and intersectionality of those I serve.
Feel free to contact me for further information concerning the work I do.
